OK, I've just gotta bark about a summer pet peeve of mine. It's a water shortage for dogs!
No, NYC is not running out of water, but New Yorkers are running out of smarts. On any given Saturday and Sunday I see lots of humans running in the heat of the day in Central Park with their pooches. The 2 legged joggers are gulping down a bottled water at the tiniest sign of sweating while they let their four legged friends pant and pant. Their furry friends can't say, "Hey, I'm dying of heat here and the only way I can cool down my very hot body is by panting - and that's not working anymore. Can I plez have some water!" They just can keep running and running till they over heat and get really sick and maybe even die.
So, here's the poop - if at all possible, keep your canine friends out of the sun between 10am and 4pm. If you must feel the urge to run or go for a long walk during the summer, try to go early or later in the day. Come on, give us a break. All that being said - we need lots and lots of water to cool our bodies down when it's hot. I saw a big lab collapse on the wet sidewalk where the door man had just watered the plant. When it was mentioned that the lab was overheated and totally needed some water - his guardian bragged, "Yeah, we've been running for over an hour and he'll have some water when he gets home." I hope he made it home!
So, I can't stress enough - water, water, water. I'm so lucky - the minute me or my pesky sister, Pudge's tongue starts hanging out, my 2 legged folks whip out the water bottle and an empty mayonaise cup to drink from. Boy, do we have them trained right! Arf-Arf!
I say - respect and a long life of fun and health for all pooches. Let's make that a law! In return, we'll love ya furever.
Arf-Arf,
Schmitty, The Real New Yorkie
